ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the psychological experience and adjustments associated with weight loss after bariatric surgery. The chapter outlines three main phases of the weight trajectory following surgery – rapid weight loss in the honeymoon phase, adjusting to slower weight loss and finally, weight loss maintenance. The different issues and challenges that arise during each of these phases are reviewed alongside tools to manage these. This includes a discussion about the inevitability of setbacks and outlines strategies to help individuals get back on track as quickly as possible.
