ABSTRACT

The Annual Meeting of this Society took place on :Monday, :M:arch 17th, in the Mansion House. In the absence of the Lord Mayor, who was prevented from attending, the meeting-a very crowded one-was presided over by the Bishop of Bedford, who opened the proceedings with an able speech, in which he insisted on the necessity of training for girls, and urged on all mistresses, in whose power it lay, the desirability -of taking gidA fresh from schools into their households to give them a certain amount of training preparatory to their entering service. The meeting was also addressed by Mr. Albert Pell, Miss F. Davenport Hill, the Rev. Dt·. Allon, Mr. J. H. Allen, the Rev. Brooke Lambert, and others. That the work of the Society progresses satisfactorily the following figures are sufficient evidence :-On December 31st, 1889, there were 8277 young servants between the ages of thirteen and twenty, in personal communication with lady friends; 1,080 ladies actively befriending young servants; 29 District Committees in the Metropolitan Area; 16 training and lodging homes; and 31 union and 4 district schools, working in connection with the Association. The gross expenditure in the year, including the homes and training schools, was £7,208 5s. lOd.
