ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the use of information and communications technology to support and advance children's learning in science, especially the skills and understanding developed through inquiry-based activities. It provides the children using computer-based technology to help learning. The chapter discusses the concept of digital literacy/competence, distinguishing it from computer literacy. It provides how the technologies, which are part of even the youngest children's lives both within and outside school, are used to extend their experience and understanding of the world around. More serious are the potential negative effects of children using social media from their own tablets or smartphones. Parents and teachers need to teach them to use the Internet and social media safely to their advantage as learners. The teacher demonstrated the use of the data-loggers and gave the children plenty of practice recording the light levels in the room. The class teacher focuses on: seed germination; seed growth; seedlings; flowering; and forming seeds.
