ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to address aspects which are found to need improvement and currently available action to enhance provision. It reviews what the subject leader can do to identify – and help colleagues to identify for themselves – aspects of teaching which can be improved. The chapter discusses some issues relating to primary teachers' confidence and science subject knowledge. It discusses ways of enhancing schools' provision for children's learning in science through monitoring and meeting needs for continuing professional development. Data collection for monitoring classroom practice involves activities such as reviewing teachers' planning, the scrutiny of pupils' work and the observation of teaching. The subject leader's file might include vision and aims statements, policy documents and information about subject audits as well as long- and medium-term plans. The subject leader has a key role here in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of teachers and in supporting staff whilst making maximum use of their expertise.
