ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the philosophical and pedagogical goals of the class and shares relevant examples from student work in the course. It examines critically how able-bodied individuals in an able-bodied culture communicate with people with disabilities. The four keys for effective communication between the differently abled and the temporarily able-bodied include: contact and communication, asking and accepting, respect and respond and empathize and engage. The course in its present form has three main assignments. The first assignment in the class is a book review, which is intended to allow students an opportunity to engage in an assessment of a selected text. The second assignment in the class is based on an analysis of an in-class presentation. The final assignment, therefore, is designed to allow students to select one aspect of the course in order to reflect on it and to evaluate and expand the class discussion of that chosen part.
