ABSTRACT

Language experience is embedded in larger experiences of mobility and mobilization. We explore the broad conceptualization of mobility in the social sciences and in applied linguistics. We consider various interdisciplinary turns that have engaged mobility on multiple levels, including the mobility turn, the multlilingual/multi/plural turn and the Latin@ turn. We argue that mobilities can best be understood in terms of regimes of mobility, and we contend that mobility regimes can result in the potential for a mobilization of experience. We illustrate the mobilization of experience through a consideration of the 1968 East LA Blowouts, and consider the underlying motivation of these events as a pursuit of justice. Finally, we consider the foundations of justice that were operationalized in the East LA Blowouts. Readers of this chapter will gain a comprehensive understanding of the sociolinguistics of mobilities and mobilization among Latin@s in the U.S., and an appreciation for its ethical underpinnings.
