ABSTRACT

Pathways within an environment-just like the pathways in a park, or roads in a city-can readily be reduced to an abstract line concept. Whether a system of pathways is aligned to the circle, square, or triangle determines the visual pattern projected on-screen and the emotional effect on players. Where applicable, the following examples feature an aerial map alongside in-game screenshots to emphasize the relationship between 2D line concepts and 3D environments. The interactive aspect of video games also means that pathway shapes inuence character movements and the player’s gestures as they navigate the environment.
