ABSTRACT

In a discussion about technology, journalism and the rapid pace of change there is always something “new” or about to happen that will have an impact significant enough that it alters the path of history. The political economy of journalism describes, analyses and theorizes a system based on the “duality of the news commodity” and a powerful, over-riding ideology that puts profits and staying in power above the needs of society and above the real public interest. News and journalism is one area of industry and employment where robots are certainly having an impact. In every industry where automation has been introduced, the number of human workers has decreased over time; there is no reason why journalism will be any different. The blog entry contains a “live tracker” that is supposed to be keeping a tally of the number of jobs “Automated Robot Writers” are “stealing” from humans.
