ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the basic principles of doing social journalism before branching out into more specific advice about various platforms, applications and methodologies. It is about curating and editing, which is the management of content, and it introduces some of the common apps and platforms that professional reporters and social journalists can use to publish, distribute and publicize their work. Curating has been described as “cherry-picking” the best of all the noise that is out there across multiple news channels and turning it into meaningful pleasant-sounding music to our followers’ ears. One of the easiest ways to get started as a social journalist is to aggregate content around particular themes, or breaking news items and share it via our social media feed. For social journalists the most important marker that will increase engagement is the news value in the content.
