Incommunicativeterms,thegeneralfunction ofanaphoraistoenableitems,oncementioned,to bemaintainedintheactivediscourse.However,one ofthemostvexatiousproblemswiththestudyof thisphenomenon,isthemultiplicityof subtly-differentdefinitionsofthetermitself whichexistintheliterature.Tobringsomeunity toourdiscussion,therefore,wewillstartwiththe broadestpossiblecharacterisationofthenotion, movingdowntomorerestrictivedefinitionsfavoured bythisorthatcurrentschoolofthought.
