ABSTRACT
Wehavetriedtoprovideevidenceinsupportof thethesisthatanextensionofgrammaticaltheory inthedirectionofdiscoursewillsolvemanyofthe problemsofsentence-grammarinaunifiedand naturalway.Asweseeit,aD-grammarisnota deviceequivalenttoanS-grammarexceptthatithas textsratherthansentencesasitsoutput.Thisview wouldhavetobefoundedontheuntenablepremiss thattextsdisplaythesamesortofstructural constraintsasdosentences.Instead,wepropose thataD-grammarisaS-grammar,withadditional constraintsmakingitsensitivetosequential propertiesofsentencesintexts.Asforthe S-grammarinquestion,weassumethatanyofthe currentmodels,insofarasitcanexpressthebasic syntacticpropertiesofsentences,willbeadequate.
