ABSTRACT

For centuries, relationships with horses have been associated with human wellbeing. More recently, horses are included in physical, occupational, speech, and mental health therapy provided by licensed healthcare professionals. In this chapter, readers will be asked to identify the different theories related to why horses may be included in human healthcare, the benefits associated with human-animal interactions, and the key theories associated with nature-based therapies. Readers will also describe the different forms of animal-assisted therapy and discuss how various animal species and nature-based activities can be incorporated in an equine-assisted therapy session.
