ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how surveillance systems can aid in an organization's security efforts. The complexity of surveillance systems was also discussed along with some of the challenges in achieving a reasonable return on investment from the surveillance system. The chapter also examines potential staffing issues and the long-term cost of ownership of surveillance systems. It explains how to decide to install a surveillance system, and how to select a surveillance system. The chapter reviews the economic impact of employee misuse of an organization's technology, and the need to actually use the data generated by some surveillance systems to determine which employees or visitors have been violating security policies or procedures. It examines what emerging and future surveillance technology will be able to add to an organization's security efforts, and the need to check on state laws that could restrict the use of certain surveillance systems.
