ABSTRACT
Thepurposeofthispaperistostudysomefeaturesofthelanguageusedforreportingontheuseoflanguage.Itwilllookatthe waysinwhichthegrammaticalresourcesemployedmayvary fromonekindofdiscoursetoanother.Reportingontheuseof languageincludesnotonlytellingwhatpeoplesaid,butalso whattheythought.Ihavechosenthreekindsofnarrativeforthe purpose,thoughtheterm'narrative'isusedlooselyhereina non-technicalsensetomeananyrecountingofeventsfromthe past,realorimagined.Thekindsofnarrativechosenare(A) reportsofparliamentaryproceedingsinthepress,(B)conversationalanecdoteand(C)prosefiction.
