ABSTRACT

We have no space to enter into the many painful controversies which this book has aroused. It is, perhaps, impossible that any biography, not uniformly laudatory,. published during the lifetime of intimate friends and relations, should fail to excite criticism or dissent. There may be some errors or inaccuracies inseparable from such a task, but in our opinion Mrs. Fenwick Miller has done her work as biographer faithfully and lovingly, and has effectively contributed to the love and veneration with which Harriet Martineau will be regarded by all women who are, like herself, striving upwards after a higher standard of know ledge and freedom;
