In so dOing, the speaker assumes (1) that on the basis of the discourse

entity via the minimal cues of pronominal reference. <*2) The referent

While I am claiming that anything that can be referenced pronominally is a discourse entity, I am not claiming that every discourse entity can be referenced pronominally. This will be an important point later when I argue that it is not only for pronoun reference that one needs to form appropriate descriptions for discourse entities evoked by the text.
