ABSTRACT

In general, informal political debates, such as those on genetically modified (GM) crops, there is no formal set of procedures, and it is interesting to reflect upon how the debate has developed in terms of people choosing which side and what arguments to support. It is evident that there are two sides proponents and opponents to the use of GM crops, and on special occasions they switch sides, attracting media attention and possibly affecting the course of the debate. This chapter discusses what happens when participants of the GM debate decide to change their view on transgenic crops. It is important to identify the actors involved in the GM debate. They include scientists, civil society representatives, members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or activists, policymakers and representatives of business, farmers and consumers who also either form their own NGOs or support activist campaigns and organisations. Another participant group in the debate is that of farmers.
