ABSTRACT

This conclusion provides an overview of the key ideas discussed in this book. The book distinguishes six broad discourses which cover major ideas on genetically modified (GM) crops: nature fundamentalism, post-colonialism, regionalism, sustainability, alterglobalism and feminism. It offers different arguments in favour or against GM crops. The major themes which appear throughout all discourses are discussion of future models of agriculture with particular focus to smallhold farmers and impact on environment, equality (political, economic, gender) and public trust in science. Most discourses are dimensional – they are framed as alternative, a critique to the mainstream approach (conventional agriculture, mainstream genetic science, mainstream aid policy and a traditional gender hierarchy model). One can see that there are overlaps: activists and organisations they represent cover in some cases more than one discourse. It is also safe to say that Dr Vandana Shiva is the most cited activist and has the most intense networks with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working on the subject worldwide.
