ABSTRACT

Fundamentalism can be defined as 'a religious movement characterized by a strict belief in the literal interpretation of religious texts', 'strict adherence to any set of basic ideas or principles' or, simply, the beliefs held by those in a religious movement. This chapter describes a well-developed system of ideas, 'religious texts', and a network of organisations and movements that promote their ideology and run campaigns. Florianne Koechlin is an interesting example of the anti-genetically modified (GM) plants activist. In her work, Koechlin makes references to a number of scientific publications and experiments and accompanies these references with her own socio-philosophical interpretations. Koechlin refers to three main approaches in synthetic biology: the Chassis-model, the Lego-model and the synthetisation of DNA sequences. Dr Koechlin is particularly known for her controversial statements that plants have dignity and that this presupposition should be reflected in legal terms.
