ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines previous research to conceptualise the relationship between the police and trans communities. It focuses on theories of police culture and gender role ideology within police environments to better understand how bias can thrive through understanding occupational socialisation. The book aims to provide examples demonstrating how and why lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender+ identities encounter bias and conflict within policing. It shows how trans officers construct their gendered identities within policing while negotiating a hyper masculine environment where gender expectations are heightened. The book describes the specific administrative challenges that transgender identities face when transitioning at work. It also explores the administrative issues that members of the transgender policing community face. The book contains a summary of empirical findings and theoretical arguments which solidify future research implications within the realm of ‘queer criminology’.
