There was a great deal of sentiment CODnected with a subject of this kind, as weil as misgivings and doubt. On this matter he quite agreed with what their Bishop said at the Conference a little time ago-if there was anything in sentiment worth preserving, preserve it by aB means; but when sentiment stood in the way of real progress, real good, away with it in tbe name of God. He did not contemplate any danger from this movement. Anxiety there must be i because it was making a venture ; and tbe University was not 80 firm1y established-though they were more firmly established now than they were some time ago -that they could afford to "play tricks" with them'3elves and risk the future. At the same time" nothing venture and nothing have." Even from a merely selfish point of view, he believed these proposals-if tbey surceeded in carrying them, and he believed there was a reasonable chance, and more than a reasonable chance-- they would be areal benefit to Durham. On the other hRlld, the gist of the thing was not the way it would affect themselvea, but the way in which it would affect others. While they looked at it from tbe point of view of their own intereats, let them also look at it in tbe interest of those ",ho appealed to tbem i and those of them present who bad to make their way in the world sureIy must feel that this consideration came home to them whose education was drifting abroad, so to speak, and who, when educated, scarcely know when they will be able to compensate themselves for die pains tbey had bestowed. When ladIes were educated, what proof could tbey give of it? But if they had got thei! degree and could show thei! diploma, tbat wou1d be a proof tbat they deserved tbeir reward. Tben tbey would bave made for themselves a place in life. It was tbeir duty to support this measure so far as they could, aod he said, "so far as they could" advisedly. For as tbe Warden bad just said, tbe advocates of this measure--the people who were making tbe
