ABSTRACT

These pages present an analysis of the labels, contents, and epistemological borders of the subject called “Hispanic linguistics,” including its relationship with “Lusophone linguistics,” during the last century. The chapter is divided into four sections devoted to showing the evolution of the term hispánico throughout the 20th century, presenting the two paradigms that have articulated “Hispanic linguistics” during the last decades, analyzing the relationship between Hispanic linguistics and Lusophone linguistics and, finally, showing an overview of the treatment that Hispanic linguistics has received in university curricula in Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and the United States.
