ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of Latin America, including specifics principally about Mexico, Brazil, as well as some information on Argentina. Underlying all of Latin America's difficulties is the need for integral development in the areas of education, healthcare, and opportunities for self-development. The chapter presents information on the principal cultural themes and conditions that affect doing business in or visiting this part of the global market. It examines some of the challenges for pan-American cooperation in the decades ahead. The chapter explains strengths of North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for Mexico, the United States (US), and Canada. It illustrates some cultural differences over a number of variables, starting with family, between Mexico and Canada and the US. The chapter explains some characteristics of negotiating styles in Brazil. Establishing a warm working relationship with one's counterparts is essential to the process and facilitates the negotiation.
