ABSTRACT

In the course of a series of interviews between 2010 and 2013, the phrase ‘seeds of creation’ re-occurred in reference to the very earliest moments in

Vardimon’s development of new work. The image resonates with associated terms applicable to the variety of ways that Vardimon, with her colleagues, has researched and developed performances over the course of the last eighteen years. The starting process for each of her performance pieces reflects the singularity of every dance and, just as seeds might require different timings, environments, fertilisation or propagation methods to germinate, so the initial stages of each dance piece varied. However, in these reflections on process, Vardimon commented on essential elements that recur in the initial stages of making a piece without suggesting that this forms a habitual methodology. An idea might lie dormant for many years, such as that for 7734, awaiting the right sets of conditions to nurture its emergence, or the initial concept may warrant re-working through a graft onto a more substantial stem as in the case of Therapist and Lullaby.
