ABSTRACT

Muslim women from the Middle East approached Margaret Talbot in the late 1990s, when she was President of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW), asking for the Association’s help to challenge stereotypes and barriers to their progress in the field. She worked ceaselessly to promote and support efforts around the world to promote and follow this mission through. Hence it was decided to use material, with the kind permission of the publisher Routledge, from the book Muslim Women and Sport, edited by T. Benn, G. Pfister and H. Jawad (2011), for this chapter in her Festschrift. It was one outcome from a study week in Oman in 2008 that Margaret inspired and chaired and is a tribute to her support for this complex and highly sensitive area of gender studies in sport and physical education.
