ABSTRACT

MANCHESTER MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.-The Manchester Critic says: "At the late annual meeting of the Manchester Mechanics' Institute, it was found that the name of a lady, Miss L. E. Willis, had been omitted from the list of candidates proposed as vice-presidents and directors, although she had been duly proposed and secondt:d. The reason for this omission was stated to be that, being a female, she was ineligible for the office of a director. Dr. Pankhurst and others immediately joined issue on this question, and the result was, we are happy to sar, a complete victory for the supporters of Women's RIghts." A correspondent from Manchester adds, "The meeting of members decided, by an overwhelming majority, that the lady was eligible as a director, and ordered that her name should be put upon the voting paper; but as these had all been printed before, and were, I believe, given. out without her name, the vote was practically useless, as she could not be elected by a voting paper on which her name was not printed. I suppose the matter will have to stand over till next year, when her nominator must see that she is put on the voting paper."
