ABSTRACT

A dinner in aid of this institution was held on March 20th in Willis's Rooms, H.R.H. the Prince of Wales occupying the chair. This charity was founded in 1871 for the reception of the female children of persons convicted of crime, and fol' the class of children who are met with in the criminal haunts of the metropolis, and thus exposed to all the dangers of evil association. It is conducted on the family (or group) system, the children not residing all together in one large building, but being divided into groups of about 10 girls each, of different ages, each group living in a separate cottage under the care of a widow, who acts as the "mother" of the "family." The strictest economy is exercised, the details being restricted to the humblest form of English cottage life. There are now 180 children in the village, but there is provision, as soon as funds will admit for a total of 200. Donors of £100 become life governors,
