ABSTRACT

This was the status of the kingdom at the time of the rulers 837 [assigned by] the caliphs, from the [Islamic] conquest and up to the end of the Ikhshidid era. I am not well-informed of its regulation [during this era]. It appears that its viceroys and amirs at the time followed the same manner [of regulation] as the Arabs, until Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn and his sons came to power and introduced royal regulation. However, most of Ibn Ṭūlūn’s soldiers were Sudanese, to the extent that it is said that 12,000 of his soldiers were black. The Ikhshidid state followed suit until the end of its era.
