ABSTRACT
The fast began towards the end of September 1924, and lasted for twenty-one days. It was undertaken at a time when he had only just recovered from a very serious illness and operation. With remarkable foresight, he had laid all stress in his letter to Hakim Ajmal Khan, just before his imprisonment, on Hindu-Muslim Unity.1 It was in order to uphold and sustain this unity that he undertook this fast.
