ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on dyslexia-friendly reading strategies begins with a case study on Nicholas. It illustrates his dyslexic needs and how they were not met by the usual classroom practices and then shows what happens when they are directly addressed with dyslexia-friendly methods. The book shows that a new research with cohorts of Reception children identified the problems they have and the techniques that have proved successful in addressing them. It is here that the handwriting difficulties from immaturity through to dysgraphia also emerge and shows how these are identified and assessed. Underachievement is identified as a lack of achievement consistent with ability or perceived potential. The book deals with the needs of dyslexics at the end of the alphabetic phase or those who have spelling problems without reading problems through a new morphemic and strategic programme.
