ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 of this client workbook corresponds to Session 2 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. The therapist reviews the client’s goals for treatment and explains how this treatment can help the client achieve those goals. The benefits and costs of drinking, as well as the client’s reasons for wanting to change their drinking are discussed. Also, the therapist begins to identify situations that pose a risk to the client’s sobriety. The therapist introduces the concept of mindfulness and how it can be used to increase awareness of the present moment. In Emotion Regulation Treatment (ERT), mindfulness is used to increase awareness and acceptance of emotions, urges and cravings, and accompanying physical sensations. The client then learns a mindfulness technique called Object-Centered Mindfulness. The goal is to strengthen the client’s ability to sustain their attention to the present moment. Finally, between-session skill practice is assigned.
