ABSTRACT

This client workbook chapter corresponds to Session 4 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In Chapter 6, the client and therapist discuss the influence of thoughts on emotions and behavior. They also review some common thoughts that people have about alcohol that can lead to drinking. Next, they review how thoughts can influence emotions. The client and therapist then discuss an effective method for managing emotion-generating thoughts called Cognitive Reappraisal. After identifying several thoughts that affect the client’s emotions, the client engages in a Cognitive Reappraisal exercise to develop one or more ways to think differently about the situation. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
