ABSTRACT

This client workbook chapter corresponds to Session 6 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In Chapter 8, the therapist reviews with the client all of the CBT and ERT skills that have been discussed thus far in treatment. The therapist engages the client in a discussion of those skills that the client finds most useful. Next, the therapist introduces the topic of problem solving. The problem-solving method is reviewed and applied to one or more of the client’s high-risk drinking situations. The client also learns how the problem-solving method can be used with the emotion regulation skills to solve problems that involve unpleasant emotions. Finally, to prepare for upcoming sessions that focus on direct experiencing of emotion, the therapist takes the client through a guided imagery exercise as preparation for conducting imaginal exposure to unpleasant emotional drinking situations. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
