ABSTRACT

This client workbook chapter corresponds to Session 7 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In Chapter 9, the terms lapse and relapse are defined and a discussion focuses on how to both prevent and cope with a lapse or relapse if one occurs. Next, the therapist reviews the rationale for conducting imaginal exposure to a drinking situation involving unpleasant emotion and talks about why engaging with uncomfortable emotions and sensations can help break the connection between these emotions and craving for alcohol. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
