ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 describes the diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD), the characteristics of emotion and emotion regulation, the role of emotions in alcohol use, and Emotion Regulation Treatment (ERT) of alcohol use disorders (AUDs). The benefits and risks of the treatment program are reviewed as is the role that medications can play in the treatment of AUD.
