ABSTRACT

This chapter corresponds to Session 10 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In this session, the therapist and client re-evaluate the treatment goals and review progress towards abstinence, while identifying any remaining areas of concern. The client is provided with information regarding the use of stimulus control to manage high-risk drinking situations and develops a personalized stimulus control plan. The final direct experiencing of emotion session is conducted. During imaginal exposure to the client’s negative affect high-risk drinking situation the therapist focuses on areas of high negative affect or “hot spots.” As in the previous session, the post-exposure processing focuses on assessing potential changes in the client’s experience of the high-risk drinking situation including emotions, urge or cravings, and self-efficacy to manage similar situations in the future without drinking. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
