ABSTRACT

This chapter corresponds to Session 1 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. It provides the therapist with information about establishing rapport and engaging the client in the treatment process. Next, the therapist reviews the structure and nature of the treatment program including the goal of abstinence and importance of active skill practice within and between sessions. Education is provided to the client regarding the ways in which alcohol and emotions interact and how the client’s own drinking may be related to their emotional experiences. The nature and purpose of emotions and the importance of engaging with their emotions rather than avoiding or escaping them are explained. Finally, the therapeutic technique of mindfulness is introduced, practiced in session, and assigned for between-session skill practice.
