ABSTRACT

This chapter corresponds to Session 12 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In this final session, the therapist reviews the client’s progress in treatment. The review focuses on effective skills and strategies for managing high-risk situations, use of emotion regulation skills for managing negative affect, urges or cravings to drink, and physical sensations. The therapist reinforces the client’s progress towards meeting drinking goals. Working collaboratively, the therapist and client complete a relapse prevention plan that includes identification of the client’s personal relapse warning signs, preferred skills for managing high-risk situations, identification of social supports for abstinence, and any additional treatment needs. At the end of the session, the therapist obtains client feedback on the treatment program. This information is obtained with the goal of improving ERT.
