ABSTRACT

In this introduction, the author presents the subject matter of the book; portraying scenarios of poverty and food insecurity in the Free State Province, South Africa through the narratives of persons there who live in multidimensional poverty. This book is based on the premise that the food insecure are theorists of their own reality and are in many ways agents in confronting challenges of multidimensional poverty that they face. She explains that this province is a fascinating place to understand these issues in post-apartheid South Africa because it is the birthplace of both the ANC and the National Party, and is a place where many of the societal structures of apartheid still remain. While the stories told in this book are of people in this particular province, the personal and collective stories contribute to the contemporary dialogue on poverty, food insecurity/security and sustainability in South Africa, and around the world, particularly in the intersection of the fields of poverty, food democracy, food justice and critical adult education. This introduction ends by delineating the content of the six chapters of the book:
