ABSTRACT

Several initiatives by governments and international agencies are driving companies toward better transparency, ethical behavior, and social and environmental responsibility. This chapter shows some key initiatives that are encouraging businesses to act responsibly and develop operations that respect people, workers, and the environment, thereby building a sustainable future. Foreign Corruption Practices Act is a US law that applies to all US companies and individuals. It forbids paying bribes to foreign officials to gain or retain business. The International Labor Organization Declaration is a set of standards focusing on labor rights and relations. The objective of the global reporting initiative is to enhance the quality of sustainability reporting. The mission of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development is to promote policies that contribute to the well-being of societies all around the world. The sustainable development goals represent a global call for action aiming at eliminating poverty.
