ABSTRACT

This chapter examines four main strategic areas where ethics is relevant. These are organization-wide issues that contribute, if implemented well, to the emergence of an organization that is more aligned with ethical values and ethical behaviors. We first explain the important role of organizational culture in shaping ethical values within the organizations. Second, we address the important role that leaders can play in having effective, yet accountable, organizations. Third, we introduce corporate governance as a mechanism by which organizational objectives can be pursued in a legal and transparent manner. Finally, we elaborate on the growing role of social responsibility in business, outlining various perspectives on this issue. Throughout the chapter, we draw on examples from companies in the Middle East to illustrate how those four aspects operate in this region.
