ABSTRACT

This research examined the interface between macroeconomic policy and the world’s environmental challenges. The opening premise was that to resolve the environmental challenges the world faces in the twenty-first century, of climate change, resource depletion, deforestation and other environmental damage, requires re-examination of macroeconomic policy. The research has carried out such an examination by focussing on the fault lines between economic globalization and sustainability; exploring an alternate framework with sustainability as overarching policy; and testing the ideas within the specific context of aviation. The research sought answers to three particular questions:

1How could the formulation of macroeconomic policy be reframed to incorporate sustainability?
