ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the use of sign language to teach sign language literature in first language (L1) classrooms. The goal of teaching sign language literature is to develop sign linguistic and cultural literacies among deaf and hard of hearing children who use sign language as L1. Sign language literature includes works that are recorded on videos or performed live. Studies on theoretical aspects of the teaching of literature using sign language address the concepts and efficacy of using sign language to teach sign language literacy through sign language literature. Best practices for using sign language to teach sign language literature to signing deaf and hard of hearing learners in the L1 classrooms are offered. Future trends include studies on how sign language literature can enhance language and identity development, and be incorporated in K-12 curriculum at schools and programs for signing deaf and hard of hearing children.
