ABSTRACT

How much food is demanded is affected by many factors, one of which is size of population. This chapter addresses how population impacts on food security. It first shows how population change affects food demand. It then discusses how human beings have tried to feed the fast expanding population since World War II. It also presents trends in population growth and points out that future population expansion will create greater demand for food and thus make it harder for human beings to achieve food security. It argues that regions and countries with high population growth but low food security should control their population expansion to be compatible with their food resource availability and production sustainability.
