ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss the historical entry of women into the policing profession, current trends in employment and leadership positions, and provide an overview of challenges that they commonly face on the job. A significant portion of the chapter will devote attention to presenting their own narrative experiences in their career trajectory including obstacles they faced, how they overcame challenges, and recommendations for future female criminal justice leaders. Regional differences as well as the intersectionality of gender, race, and sexual orientation in experiences will be highlighted throughout the chapter.
