ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to address the issue of how smart cities are utilising sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation. It discusses the role of the environment in smart cities by providing examples of innovative programmes that have been developed. The technology focus of smart cities focuses on the role of innovations, such as mobile communication transforming the way people live and work. Smart cities have spread throughout the world due to the increased emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation in society. Entrepreneurship is an integral part of smart cities due to the process of opportunity recognition and creativity needed for continual change in the knowledge economy. Entrepreneurship in smart cities can be examined at the firm level to explain why firms grow faster than others. This is due to firms often being more entrepreneurial due to their marketing and organisational characteristics. The environmental school of thought involves looking at the role of social, economic, technological, political, legal and international factors that affect entrepreneurship.
