ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the connectivity by looking at ways universities have been entrepreneurial from building eco-friendly buildings to introducing new public transport systems. It provides an overview of entrepreneurial universities and the changes affecting the education system in cities. The high-technology emphasis also involves focusing on start-ups and incubators as part of the push towards student entrepreneurship. More universities have technology transfer offices that place value on the commercialisation of research in terms of licensing and patenting. This is due to most universities having only recently focused on entrepreneurship as part of their teaching and research objectives. This recent emphasis on entrepreneurship in universities is linked to cities as it plays a part in the cultural environment. Hulsbeck and Pickave state that "universities produce new knowledge using human capital in form of research and education". The entrepreneurial university is considered a new type of university, as it focuses on commercialisation and engagement with the community.
