ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how countries and regions are differentiating themselves based on innovative ways that appeal to people. It also discusses the history and development of cities around the world on the basis of their live ability and lifestyle with a focus on entrepreneurship and competitiveness. This provides a better understanding of new ways cities are organizing functions and linking services. The chapter provides a definition of a smart city and also a discussion about the rise of smart cities in the global economy. It examines the rationale for the move towards cultural and intellectual cities followed by an analysis of the role of creativity in smart cities. This provided a useful way to understand the global competitiveness of cities due to increased emphasis on live ability by citizens and the need for smart communities. The chapter also provides a foundation for understanding cities and their role in regions and territorial capital by focusing on cities as social change.
