ABSTRACT

The first step to emancipation "thus gained, the plebeians called to remembrance a tradition that one of the ancient kings had designed to establish complete equality between the two orders. A conviction thereupon !,'Tewapace that no mere conceSSIOns should be acce,pted as a final settlement of the question, that nothmg short of the complete equality intended by king Servius 'r'llllius would meet the demands of justice. The struggle that issued in the realization of this project continued over two hundred years, and need not be described in detail; but some of its incidents are instructive when compared with recent and familiar events.
