ABSTRACT

Light, for the architect Christian Norberg-Schulz, is a medium that unites the disparate elements of the world:

The study of light . . . is something more than a mere investigation of illumination. Light and things belong together, and every place has its light. Light, things and places can only be understood in their mutual relationship. The phenomenology of things and places is also the phenomenology of light. In general, they all belong to the phenomenology of earth and sky. The sky is the origin of light, and the earth its manifestation. Therefore light is the unifying ground of the world. Always the same and always different, light reveals what is.
